Standards-Aligned System

The Standards-Aligned System (SAS) is a model that aligns 6 elements that support student achievement:
  1. Clear standards
  2. Fair assessments
  3. Curriculum framework
  4. Instruction
  5. Materials and resources
  6. Interventions

In the Standards-Aligned System, all 6 elements must be implemented and work together to maximize student learning. More information about the complete SAS is available on PDE's SAS portal.

The documents below are PDFs of the curriculum frameworks in dance, music, theatre and visual arts. Visit PDE's SAS portal to see the connections between these frameworks and the other 5 circles of the SAS.

Each curriculum framework is based on six big ideas. These big ideas are the same in all 4 arts disciplines, K-12.
  1. The skills, techniques, elements and the principles of the arts can be learned, studied, refined and practiced.
  2. Artists use tools and resources as well as their own experiences and ideas to create art.
  3. The arts provide a medium to understand and exchange ideas.
  4. Humans have expressed experiences and ideas through the arts throughout time and across cultures.
  5. There are formal and informal processes used to assess the quality of works in the arts.
  6. People use both aesthetic and critical processes to assess quality, interpret meaning and determine value.
